Caring For Your Glasses

Glasses are an important investment. With over half the population wearing them, it’s no wonder that people spend ample time selecting the right frames. This being said, it’s only logical that you would want to take care of your investment. Though, numerous people don’t know everything that goes into extending the life of their glasses. The following tips can significantly add to the lifespan of your frames.

1. Keep them in the case when not in use

To many, this may seem like a no-brainer. Though, surprisingly, a great deal of individuals do not have a case, or hardly use the one they have. This is the first step to making your glasses last. Your case is its foremost protection against the world. Why keep you glasses exposed, when you have a convenient way of safeguarding them? Invest in a case, and keep your glasses tremendously more protected.

2. Avoid harsh cleaning methods

When cleaning your glasses, you should first start by rinsing them under a gentle stream of lukewarm water. This will help clean them of any debris that might be on them. Next, it’s important to only clean them with a very small amount of lotion-free dishwasher liquid. Don’t use spit or alcohol. Also, do not wipe your lenses with a tissue, paper towel, your shirt, or paper napkin. These surfaces can be harmful to the lens. Window cleaners and other cleaners with ammonia, bleach, or vinegar should not be used either.

3. Take them off with two hands

This helps keep the earpieces straight and aligned. Using one hand to take your glasses off can stretch them out and greatly loosen them. Grip both earpieces and pull your frames straight off of your face. This can also be compared to putting your glasses atop your head. This has the potential to stretch your frames out, as well.

4. Don’t leave them in the car (or any other hot places)

It’s unwise to leave anything in your car on a hot day (i.e. food, people, animals, etc.), so why would your glasses be any different? On an 80-degree day, a car parked in direct sunlight can climb to temperatures as high as 172 degrees. This will quite literally melt your glasses, especially if they are plastic frames. The heat also has the potential to warp your lenses.

Glasses are an investment you should cherish. There would be no need to constantly keep buying glasses as often as you might be if you simply learn how to take care of them, the best you can. Follow these easy steps and your frames will surely stick with you through thick and thin.
